About Nike:
In January 1964, track and field coach Bill Bowerman and runner Phil Knight formed Blue Ribbon Sports which became the U.S. distributor of Onitsuka Tiger and essencially the foundation for what would become Nike. Bowerman began by deconstructing Tiger shoes to make them lighter and tested them on his athletes. The "waffle sole" made it's debut in the U.S. Track & Field Trials of 1972. Created with a waffle iron, the outsole's design was light and provided more traction than traditional athletic footwear and would be the first of many Nike innovations.
