To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Wu-Tang’s seminal debut album “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)”, the influential hip hop collective has collaborated with Clarks Originals to create a collection of Wallabees that will be available in Australia exclusively at Hype DC.

The Clarks Wallabee arrived on the scene in 1967 with a simple moccasin construction and distinct crepe sole. The silhouette was adopted by Jamaican “rudeboys” magentised to its casual appeal in the early 70s, and the shoe’s status was imported to the USA through Jamaican migrants moving to America’s east coast. While the Wallabee continued to remain a staple among certain subcultures throughout the 80s and early-90s, it remained dormant during the period that was largely dominated by performance sneakers until Wu-Tang Clan introduced the shoe to a new generation.

The nine-member group changed the landscape of hip hop when they released “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)” in 1993. They vividly illustrated urban dystopia with a brand-new style unlike anything else that came before; a grimy, unpolished soundscape that redefined the burgeoning subculture and set the foundations of rap as we know it. As Wu-Tang grew into a musical powerhouse during the decade, the crew also exported their own flavour of New York street style. While they combined 90s sportswear, rugged workwear and classic sartorial staples in similar ways to their contemporaries – their undying love for the Clarks “Wally” was a distinctive choice that became synonymous with Wu-Tang. At the peak of their popularity the group expanded into fashion with their Wu Wear clothing label and even paid homage to the Wallabee with their own Deville moccasin.

To pay tribute to Wu-Tang Clan on the 25th anniversary of their debut album, Clarks Originals have finally given the group the opportunity to release an official collection of three Wallabees to solidify Wu-Tang’s connection with the silhouette. The group’s signature yellow-and-black combination adorns two colourways, while the third cream and navy version is a nod to an infamous skit where Wu-Tang member Ghostface Killah professes his love for the shoe. Each pair features Wu-Tang embossed logo on the heels and comes with a gold leaf Wu Wear fob, with custom details stamped under the tongues denoting the debut album – “Enter the Wu-Tang” on the left and “9 November 1993” on the right.
