While the legacy of British sportswear atelier HI-TEC spans more than four decades and comprises of a multitude of technological and performance innovations, the brand has flown relatively under the radar in Australia. With history firmly rooted in the sporting spotlight, their latest chapter introduces their heritage styles through a contemporary fashion lens under the new HI-TEC HTS74 banner. The HTS74 name pays homage to the brand’s roots – founded in 1974 in the appropriately-named village of Shoeburyness, HI-TEC hit the ground running thanks to their eponymous Squash shoe.

In 1981, HI-TEC entered the running world with the Silver Shadow, a design that quickly became an affordable multi-purpose footwear option in the UK. The Silver Shadow even became the standard-issue training shoe used by the British Army for close to 20 years because of its initial popularity. HI-TEC HTS74 updates this iconic runner with the Silver Shadow RGS. Short for Rolling Gait System, this new chunky innovation was crafted together with renowned Italian sole manufacturer VIBRAM, designed to support natural movement coupled with VIBRAM’s famous durability. The RGS sole is a dynamic performance construction that lowers energy consumption and muscle strain through a curved design, while a rugged outsole is a nod to the brand’s hiking heritage. For this debut collection at Hype DC, the Silver Shadow RGS is elevated further with premium suede and mesh construction perched atop light coloured midsoles.

The Badwater 146 ABC is a flagship 1989 style that was designed specifically to tackle the grueling 146-mile (235 kilometer) ultramarathon held in the Badwater Basin of Death Valley, California. Described as “the world’s toughest foot race”, HI-TEC embraced the challenge and crafted an endurance silhouette with a progressive cushioning system that could survive Death Valley . The Air Ball Concept, or ABC, was a breakthrough innovation from the golden era of footwear design that saw a patented pressurised cylinder nested into the sole’s heel, delivering one of the most competitive forms of support, cushioning and energy return available at the time. The accordion design of the ABC allows maximum compression on impact, resulting in extra boost with liftoff. The modern relaunch of the Badwater 146 sees an original offering of leather, mesh, suede and terry lining, as well as the signature serrated ABC sole unit. Retro colour schemes and original logos make this throwback a vintage-lovers dream.
