Wenuri is a student, promoter and all ‘round cool girl who stars in our current campaign. She knows what it means to be a Hype Girl – to always be authentic and embrace her unique sense of style and self. We asked Wenuri to take a moment to tell us a bit more about herself, and of course, what kicks from Hype she’s wearing right now.

My name is Wenuri de Silva.

I’m a part-time science student at Sydney University. I’m also a promoter for S*A*S*H*, one of Sydney’s longest-running house music parties. And I’m a waitress at Bills in Surry Hills and Bondi.

I’m best known for being up for a boogie and tequila shots at absolutely any hour of the day, my (not so) slight addiction to chocolate and my shaved head.

I’d describe myself as a typical Aries – independent, passionate, confident and a little bit reckless.

My friends would describe me as quite free-spirited and easy-going but would tell you not to fuck with me… and also that I’m super loose haha.

To me, creativity is stepping as far out of the box as possible, taking normal and turning it on its head.

Shooting the Hype Girl campaign was something completely new to me! It definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone a bit, but I loved every minute of it and I got to meet some mad chicks doing really cool things! It got me excited to get creative again in the future.

I get hyped up about understanding the power and resilience of the human body. As an anatomy and physiology student, I’d say I’m definitely a bit of a science nerd. I think the human body is THE COOLEST thing. Every little cell has a significant purpose, and it works as hard as possible 24/7 to keep us functioning. How cool is that?!

I also get really hyped by the sense of community I witness every Sunday at S*A*S*H*. A good friend of mine put it perfectly – “We share something in these fleeting moments. You, the dancer, the DJ – it’s intimate – it’s honest – it’s open and all bound by music”. There’s really nothing else quite like it for me.

If I could change one thing about the world it’d be how disconnected we are from ourselves, from each other and from nature.

I’d describe my style as effortless, comfortable and oversized.

If I was a shoe, I’d be a pair of all-black adidas Ozweegos or a pair of chunky black Dr Martens – depending on my mood.

Right now I'm wearing all-black adidas NMD_R1s.

My favourite person in the world is my mama because I have never met someone more selfless, pure and strong.

If I could eat one meal forever it’d be the schnitty bagel from Lox in a Box. It’s literally impossible for me to pick one meal to eat forever, so this is just what I’m currently obsessed with.

In five years you’ll find me hopefully still living by the beach, covered in tattoos and probably still with a shaved head, just doing me.

The album I’m playing on repeat at the moment is Ego Death by The Internet.

The best advice I’ve ever been given is to be impeccable with your word, don’t take things personally, don’t make assumptions and always do your best. From The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz.

This year has been a rollercoaster, to say the least. It’s definitely been a challenge but it’s also been quite eye-opening and grounding and also quite exciting and empowering for me.

Next year I’ll be (fingers crossed) making my way to Amsterdam at some point, or travelling anywhere really!
