The New Balance 99X series has represented the company’s pinnacle running offering since 1982, winning the hearts and minds of runners and sneakerheads over the next four decades with a sea of grey suede and innovative tech. Among the line-up, the 997 silhouette from 1990 stands out as a fan-favourite thanks to its aggressive design and rarity during the formative years of sneaker culture in the new millennium.

The fervour that surrounded vintage 997s led it to become a primary shoe within New Balance Classics’ collaboration program from 2008. Initially reserved only for premium releases and ultra-exclusive collaborations, the mythical status of the 997 only grew as it became a canvas for some of the most memorable NB releases in recent memory.

This year, New Balance debut the lightweight 997H and reimagined 997 Sport for the modern era. The 997S has taken the original 997 DNA and amplified it to create a new, bold take on the NB classic. The lightweight upper is a modernised version of the original with contemporary construction, while the sole unit exaggerates the 1990 design cues to create a chunky oversized design in-line with today’s trends. Pillars of New Balance running innovation – ENCAP, ABZORB and MCD – are proudly displayed in oversized fashion.

Hype DC is proud to offer a collection of 997 this February. A series of seasonal 997H colourways alongside the striking 997S will be available from 2.2.19 online and at select Hype DC locations. Be part of the 997 story as the legend continues this year.
