After enjoying a fruitful year of anniversary retro releases in the Air Max 1 and Air Max 97, Nike continues the celebrations in the New Year with the impending return of the chronologically correct Air Max 98.

Like the under-appreciated Air Max 96 that was overshadowed by its previous year’s release, the 1998 edition was far from a trailblazer in its initial run.

The “Silver Bullets” were still flashing their 3M-embedded uppers and catching the gaze of all across the land. The future was reflective, and all that could be seen was the 97.

The 98’s relatively exorbitant retail price also quickly resulted in sales rack relegation – surprisingly it saw shelf time up until the year 2000 for its initial run.

With the mantelpiece of the Air Max lineage its Visible Air sole, the full length foundation laid by Christian Tressler was to have its upper redesigned. Passing the torch back to Air Max 95 designer Sergio Lozano, the 98 received a fairly radical update.

Shedding the “Silver Bullet” reputation the 97 had with its mostly 3M-reflective upper and instead focusing on strong colour blocking, the use of reflective was not forgotten and retained as edge piping around the middle panel.

Ventilation was optimised for the top portion of the foot with a long mesh panel, and the sides of the shoe were reinforced with an inner leather layer surrounded by a scuff-resistant microfiber mudguard.

While the 97 was quite futuristic in its design and featured hidden lace loops, its fixed spacing width reduced some adjustability of fit. The 98 update goes down a pragmatic path and uses speed loops on the forefoot half of the shoe to accommodate for the meatier part of the foot, and traditional eyelets at the ankle for secure lockdown.

The tongue makes no reservations about being padded and at first glance the furthest thing from ergonomic – but the generous terry lining moulds to the foot once tightened.

Of course, as street style gravitated towards keeping laces loose and popping tongues, the plushness of the shoe and its large logo was a street-friendly touch for those who had the foresight to rock the ‘98 in 1998.

With a longer production run, Nike was afforded the possibilities of experimenting with coloured air units and a wider range of colourways for the 98 as compared to the mostly reflective 97. As such, with current hype for original makeups, the idiosyncratic “Gundam” is the defining signature colourway for the Air Max 98.

Retros of other OG colours, the “Tour Yellow”, “Team Orange” and deceptively accurate period-colourblocked combinations made a quiet return on the inaugural Air Max Day of 2014 – but the “Gundam” was noticeably absent. A series of high-profile collaborative colourways appeared in 2016, further adding fuel to flame.

Regardless of wizened wearers waiting for 20 years or newcomers discovering the shoe last week, both parties can rejoice as Nike confirms the “Gundam” resurfacing in 2018.

Named after Gundam RX-78-2 from iconic mecha anime Mobile Suit Gundam, the 98 dons a predominately blue/white/red colour scheme.

Verisimilitude is retained with the Swoosh’s turn to greater attention of original details for modern reproductions. Details are faithful to the original release, down to the terry lining.
