Nathan McGuire is one of Australia’s most respected models and a proud indigenous man. Growing up playing sports, sneakers were a big part of his life. As he’s moved more and more into the world of fashion, sneakers have increasingly become a reflection of his personal style and vehicle for self-expression.

As one of this season’s Hype DC Sneakertellers, we caught up with Nathan to chat about his fondest sneaker memories and how the humble shoe has shaped his personal style.

Hey Nathan, we’re super excited to have you in our Sneakertellers campaign. Can you tell us about your favourite sneaker memory?
When I was little, I remember owning these really cool white sneakers that had double Velcro straps and electric blue soles. I thought they were the coolest and I got to wear them on our family holiday to Disneyland! So that sticks in my head.

You’re wearing Lacoste in the campaign – do you have any fond memories of the brand?
My first memory of Lacoste was as a teenager just becoming aware of fashion and seeing the iconic alligator on a polo shirt and just wanting to own a Lacoste polo shirt. I even remember the brand’s cool and colourful fragrance campaigns.

What’s your favourite thing about Lacoste sneakers?
I like the sporty and classic design. Comfort is important and you’re able to wear them with different looks. So they lend themselves to a dressy style, or when you keep it casual.

When did you realise you had a love for sneakers?
I’ve played sport my whole life, so sneakers are a staple in my wardrobe. Comfort and style are key.

How have sneakers shaped your personal style over the years?
As I’ve become more aware of fashion, the sneaker I look for has become less utility and more leaning towards my personal style and the environment I live in.

If you had your own action figure, what two accessories would it come with?
Probably some glasses and a big tote bag!
