Yes, the chunky sneaker is still a thing. And here are the styles we’re wearing this season.

Some trends keep coming back season after season. Take chunky sneakers, for example. If we cast our minds back a few years to when the 90s-inspired silhouette first emerged, it seemed like it could just be a passing phase. You may have purchased your first pair with an element of trepidation, and potentially the expectation that they were going to be a one-season wonder. But how wrong we all were.

In 2020 they’ve returned chunkier than ever, with a few new spins on the trend. If you’re yet to give dad sneakers a chance, now might be the time to cave. Here are the styles we’re wearing around the office and in-store this season.

A fresh pair of white sneakers never goes out of style. Case in point: the Nike Air Max Verona. The 2020 version is a remake of the retro style which was the first Air Max made for women. It’s also a great option if you want to get on board with the trend but prefer a more streamlined and minimal silhouette.

Fresh and White

If however, you live by the philosophy that bigger is better a pair of chunky white sneakers from Naked Wolfe could be more your speed. The cult brand embraces the trend like no other, with kicks pumped up with some serious volume.

Fila's popular Disruptor is also back with a third design iteration. The release serves up the stacked height and bulky aesthetics the style’s become known for, as well as a few small design updates on the toe box and heel.

The Sneaker Boot

Meet this season’s new take on the trend, the chunky sneaker-boot hybrid. For an affordable option, we recommended the Amanda by SHUBAR – it’s half sneaker, half boot, and delivers combat-inspired vibes. It features a leather upper, hiking-esque metal closures, and a thick 7.5cm platform sole. The padded collar rounds things out and offers some extra comfort for when you’re on your feet all day.

Bright and Bold

The Sun Chaser by Li-Ning is our top pick for embracing the trend with a vibrant pop of colour. The directional Chinese athleisure brand continues to push boundaries when it comes to innovative design, with the Sun Chaser perfectly blending sports style with streetwear aesthetics. If a minimal vibe is more your thing, Li Ning’s chunky black sneaker could be for you.

Pumped Up Soles

This season we’re seeing brands refine the chunky sneaker to embrace a thick sole, but retain a streamlined and sleek upper. If you’re a newcomer to the trend, the ASICS Sportstyle Japan S Platform could be a great place to start. The upper is super minimal, with a classic white construction and black tiger stripes.

Puma is also providing an elevated twist to the trend by reissuing its Cali sneaker but with a seriously high wedge - dubbed the Cali Wedge. Superga and SHUBAR have also jumped on the flatform train, delivering their takes on the chunky yet minimal aesthetic with the respective 2790 Tank Cotu and Emma sneaker.
