The relationship between Hip Hop and sneakers is a deeply symbiotic one - the two subcultures and personalities embodying these movements are truly intertwined. Two such entities from each space are '90s rap group A Tribe Called Quest and pioneering skate brand Vans.

It must be acknowledged that this is a three-pronged collaboration between Vans, ATCQ and The Thread Shop. For posterity, the third collaborating party is Sony Music’s licensing and merchandising creative agency, of which ATCQ’s record label Epic is a part of the umbrella.

With this collective power, and previous collaborations in the sneaker world, it was only time before Tribe release a holistic capsule collection – and Vans provides a wide selection of blank canvases to use. All give styles contain ATCQ co-branding in subtle areas like the tongue and insoles.

The Vans “A Tribe Called Quest” pack will be priced from $119.95 to $179.95 and available in unisex sizing (Mens US). The collection be available on Friday the 6th of April online and at selected Hype DC stores:

  • NSW: Pitt St Mall & World Square
  • VIC: QVM
  • QLD: Albert St
  • SA: Rundle Mall
  • WA: Carillon
  • The collection consists of:

Authentic – Paying tribute to pivotal member Phife Dawg, the canvas upper of the venerable Authentic receives an allover text print calling out the group’s favourite tracks and lyrics.

Classic Slip On – A direct visual transplant of Tribe’s very last studio album We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service. The one-piece upper panel devoid of any stitching is the perfect literal canvas for the album artwork.

Era – In a similar fashion to the CSO, the white canvas upper contains a medley of artwork from the group’s discography and alternative logos.

Old Skool – Another translation of Tribe’s back catalogue, the low-cut Old Skool is the correct sneaker to feature the Pan-African aesthetic of their second album The Low End Theory. The laces further call out ATCQ songs and albums.

Sk8-Hi – One of Vans’ earliest silhouettes draws upon one of Tribe’s earliest tracks: their second single Bonita Applebum from debut album People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. Dressed in a simple yellow suede, embroidered callouts detail elements from the song’s hit music video.
