OK, last week we briefly mentioned Sydney’s Rider in our glowing review of Melbourne Mexican joint Trippy Taco. Having thought about it all week, Rider is still the best Mexican restaurant in Australia. Now, until anyone can prove us wrong, we’ll be making a beeline for those delicious gourmet burritos, amazing soft shell tacos and believe-it-when-you-eat-it chilli chocolate brownies that Rider makes famous.

Located above The Hopetoun in Surrey Hills, Rider has a homely yet lively ambience. With mish-mashed tables and chairs, soft lighting and great music, it’s the only place I know where you can buy a bottle of red wine and have it converted into sangria by the friendly staff. Plus it’s affordable with dishes coming in at around $13 each.

The thing I’ll remember most about Rider well into my old age is it’s comprehensive collection of hot sauce. I can take heat but until you’ve tasted a bit of something called Dave’s Insanity Sauce, you haven’t experienced the painful deliciousness of the devil’s spice. Try it. You’ll love it.
