This review is a little different because it’s decidedly less trendy than most places you’ll read about these days. The restaurant is called Koliba and as you would have guessed from the title, it’s Czech and Slovak food.

Homely, fortifying and affordable, this type of food is best exemplified by Goulash, that famous paprika-spiced beef stew. Naturally you’ll find that on the menu as well as other national dishes such as pork schnitzels, fried cheese and stuffed red capsicum. Most things come with bread dumplings or mash potato so we advise you to bring your eating pants.

The surprise of the night for us was the amazing gnocchi-esque dish called Halloushki, which we ordered as a side but all regretted not having as a main. Added benefits are huge glasses of Czech beer, super strong snifters of Slivovice (plum brandy) which oddly enables you to eat more, even on a full stomach, and beautiful studel for dessert.

This may not be date food, but it’s great food all the same. Nestrovia!
