While New Balance makes quality, comfortable footwear that may evoke images of the middle-aged, it's always had its own appeal within pockets of street kids and the style-savvy, particularly with its 99x series. Kicking off with the 990 back in 1982, the model was a product of a challenge issued by New Balance chairman Jim Davis, who asked the design team to create the most innovative running shoe to date. They stepped up to the plate, and the 990 was the first athletic shoe to house a $100 price tag, with premium materials and Motion Control Device technology ensuring its place in the upper echelon of footwear. The 99x series picked up plenty of steam and continued well into the 90s, which is the golden era that has inspired the new X90 silhouette.

The X90 balances modern construction with heritage aesthetic that plays to both younger NB enthusiasts and brand purists. It features a one-piece upper that's a lighter, more streamlined approach, while the chunkier midsole zig-zags from heel to toe, taking inspiration from the decades’ past to give the X90 a distinct 'Dad shoe' feel. Still, despite the X90's sizeable midsole, it is composed of REVlite technology that prioritises responsiveness and durability at 30% lighter than its competitors. The X90 champions sleek minimalism in some parts of its body, and old-school flavour in others, making it a worthy bridge between the past and the present.
