When two brothers opened the first Vans store in Anaheim, California over five decades ago, few could have predicted the sheer omnipresence of their sneakers in the years to come. The Style 36 (the original version of the Old Skool) has been one of the brand's most favoured models, alongside the much-loved Authentic and Era. Since debuting in 1977, the Style 36 has been released in countless colours and materials (it was Vans' first skate shoe to use leather panels), also being remixed by fashion heavyweights from Marc Jacobs to Stüssy to Supreme. And in a testament to Vans' relationship with music scenes across the globe, band-themed versions have been dedicated to legendary outfits like Descendents, Bad Religion and Slayer. Recently, the Style 36 was thrust into the spotlight again after musician G Dragon wore a Marshmallow pair, leading to skyrocketing demand from K-Pop fanatics across the globe.

Still, demand for the Style 36 has been consistent and longstanding. It was the first Vans shoe to feature the side stripe - what began as a random drawing by founder Paul van Doren and initially dubbed the 'jazz stripe', eventually evolved into the brand's most recognisable logo. Moreover, the Style 36 also sports Vans' iconic waffle sole, collar padding for extra comfort, and an 'Off The Wall' badge on the rear. Originally a term coined by ‘70s skateboarders who literally rode 'Off The Wall', the motto has grown to encompass Vans' championing of individuality in skating, music, art and beyond.
