We caught up with New Balance enthusiast, Melbourne Stylist and regular Hype DC Collaborator @jadeleungstylist to bring you ways to style the New Balance 327. Jade styles two of our very own Hype DC Team; Nicolas and Simone wearing New Balance 327 exclusive to Hype DC.

Hype DC: Jade, what is it that you personally like about the New Balance 327s

Jade: There are so many beautiful details to this shoe - the textured suede and framework on the toe especially! I love the shape of the 327 – the slim silhouette gives it that sleek finish. I am also loving the restrained use of colour as seen on the Hype DC Exclusives.

Hype DC: Tell us about your styling direction for this shoot?

Jade: To me the standout of this shoe is the balance of colours and textures and the versatility that comes with that - I wanted to reflect this in the different looks I put together. I wanted to show how the 327 can be paired back to create looks that are all still accessible, approachable, but also individual to everyone.

Hype DC: We love the colour blocking look you have created for Simone.
What are your set of rules on styling looks with bright colours?

Jade: I don’t believe in rules! In terms of clothing and self-expression, if it feels right, then it should generally be right!

This colour blocked suit look is my favourite look that we did for Simone. The purple suit was a perfect match to the 327s, and I loved sneaking in that fluoro knit by St Cloud to break up all that purple.

I think most of us fall into the trap of being a bit afraid of a bit of colour, and this look is a reminder of why really shouldn’t be.

Hype DC: The New Balance 327 plays into both fashion and street culture – why is that?

Jade: The shape of the 327s lends itself to being more of a dressy sneaker. The slim line shape makes it easier to style up or down.

I think this shoe has a good balance of a little from column a, and a little from column b in terms of mixing fashion and street elements. I love the exaggerated sole, which gives the 327 that elevated fashion sneaker feel.

“I wanted to show this with a range of looks on Nicolas that achieve just that - a mix of streetwear & slightly dressier.”

“Norse Projects from HAVN is my go-to for more polished streetwear. I went with cropped trousers on Nicolas (great for tall Men like Nic) but I would also style the New Balance 327 with a baggy oversized pant suit for men as well - think Louis Vuitton Men’s SS20 Collection.”

Hype DC: Tonal pieces are staples for every wardrobe. Tell us about these looks?

Jade: I applied a tonal blocking idea for both Simone & Nicolas. Tonal looks are an easy way for anybody, any shape, to make a statement without looking like ‘you’ve tried too hard’.

The key tip I can give is to take time to find the right shapes that work for your body.

Adding a pop of colour with accessories, like the New Balance 327s is the final touch and make the look that little more interesting and fun.

The tonal look is my personal favourite look that I put together for Nicolas. With menswear styling especially – sometimes a considered but understated look says the most!

Hype DC: Are you seeing more heritage running styles incorporated into lifestyle fashion looks?

Jade: Heritage Running styles have become a massive staple as seen captured on fashion week goers all around the globe. There is a classic, familiarity in a lot of these heritage styles that make it easy to incorporate into evolving fashion trends. There is also the element of versatility and functionality with sneakers and dress shoes, that make it more accessible to achieve a runway look in our day to day.

Hype DC: One of the things we love about the New Balance 327 are the textures. How do textures influence styling choices?

Jade: The beauty of the 327 is in the details and the perfect balance of the textures.

The textured suede featured on the 327 give it a real luxe feel, which makes it easy to pair back with other luxe fabrics. Then there is a clean, flatlined approach to the rest of the 327, which give you the option to style back with more casual fabrics. Because of the variety of textures, I feel like there is a lot of choice it what you want to play off.

Hype DC: And to wrap up, describe your look.

Jade: I went with my usual on set uniform today; tailored pants and a cashmere knit. I love being able to rely on my 327s to complete and elevate my otherwise, very plain look.
