Grey and New Balance is very much like Purple and Cadbury. Effectively a trademark of the running footwear empire built by Jim Davis, the shades of grey on a numbered shoe is unmistakably NB.

The recent revamp of the perennially popular 574 has yet to resurface with a catalogue worthy grey edition - until now. Celebrating the Legacy of Grey, Hype DC brings the M574EGG.

Grey is versatile. Grey is great.

Typically ENCAP is grey. The durable and dense midsole system provides a supportive cushion resistant to excessive compression. As the name suggests, the technology comprises of a soft core encapsulated by a firmer material. In this case, ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) provides ample shock absorption, and polyurethane is used as an outer layer as its relative stiffness ensures stability and lack of torsional flex.

The 574 wasn't broken, but it has benefitted from a fix. A once-bulbous toebox resembling seasonal vegetables has been re-tooled to something a bit more svelte. A retro material makeup of suede and mesh has no qualms. Stiffer nylon meshes and improved liner fabric result in an overall improved package.

There are plenty of details for the trainerspotter to appreciate in the 574, but its success with the everyman is its simplicity. Comfort that just works and a timeless design not over the top like its contemporaries.

Avoid a narrow path by sporting New Balance sneakers - the M574EGG comes out Thursday 15th March, dubbed "Grey Day". A unisex offering, available from sizes 4-13 US.
