Sandwiched between the Nike Air Max 93 and the seminal Air Max 95, is the Air Max2 and Air Max2 Light, representing the franchise in 1994 with a blend of kinetic colour-blocking and turbo overlays. As the years went by, the aggressive design of the Air Max2 Light made it a favourite among vintage Nike collectors, making this year’s 25 anniversary reissue one of the most anticipated Air Max comebacks ever.

As its name suggests, this lightweight runner was the counterpart to the slightly heavier, but equally rare Air Max2, both of which made their debut with game-changing Air tech. It was the first time multiple, dual-pressure Air bags appeared in Air Max, offering a spread of air pressures in different parts of the sole unit for adaptable support. The Air units came in different colours on the side and rear, adding a touch of flair to the Air Max2 Light.

As one of the last Tinker Hatfield running designs of the 90s, the Air Max2 Light carried the torch of the franchise with smooth distinction. The Squared series boasted geometric design patterns across the upper, while the Light edition shed 28 grams, offering a lighter alternative for Air Max fans. Despite its trailblazing tech, the series was soon replaced with the iconic Air Max 95, boasting rear and forefoot Air support. This grail-status silhouette has built a reputation among collectors in the last 25 years, and is now returning for eager enthusiasts and anyone with a penchant for 90s nostalgia.

The original “Blue Lagoon/Laser Orange” Air Max2 Light is making its welcome return in January 2019 at Hype DC. The retro edition features the classic Air Max2 Light patch, Swoosh embossed dubraes, 3M accents, internally printed Air chambers and ample amounts of mesh for maximum breathability. Whether you’ve been waiting for years or only recently discovered its strikingly retro design, the Air Max2 Light is back in a big way in 2019. We can’t wait to see what colours will follow this year.
