Nike Sportswear address their Natural Motion design discourse by re-releasing the first of its kind, the Air Rift. The brainchild of Tobie Hatfield (a lead in the Nike FREE development genesis), the Air Rift was an outrageous breakthrough in delivering a totally unique silhouette to the running market. Drawing inspiration from Kenya's Rift Valley and the marathoners who championed races worldwide, the Air Rift was born from early Nike Free footwear prototypes. These were footwear moulds that were attempting to mimic natural motion in running while creating an unshod silhouette or sandal-esque reductionism. What resulted was an avant-garde design with a customisable fit and minimalist aesthetic. The anatomical features on the Phylon midsole, with a rubber tread inspired by Kenya's Rift Valley topography, translate to a decoupled toe. This game-changing design aspect would enhance the sock-like fit of the Rift and has since come to colour the cultish regard and folklore the Air Rift is held in. Meanwhile, the upper itself, with 2 velcro strap on the heel and midfoot, posited Neoprene and textile-engineered mesh that provided optimal breathability and ventilation. Originally witnessing a low- key release, the stridently performance driven, proto-FREE runner has since gained a cult-following and mass appeal. Back for a limited time only.
