The latest offering from Vans takes inspiration from the traditional art of Japanese Boro and Sashiko stitching. Born out of necessity, Boro patchwork, translated as “scraps of cloth”, was employed in the 19th century by the lower class at a time when cotton was a luxury commodity. Items of clothing or bedding that began to wear out were sewn together with scraps of fabric using Sashiko stitching. Translated as “little stabs”, Sashiko started off as a functional running stitch used to mend and reinforce Boro patchwork and later evolved into decorative embroidery. This process of upcycling fabrics and clothing to prolong livelihood has been a long running ethos in Japanese culture. Mottainai is a term synonymous with Boro, relating to the ethos of selvaging what nature provides. Coming full circle into the 21st century, Boro has been upcycled as a premium textile used widely throughout the fashion industry.

Vans have applied the traditional technique onto two of their heritage models. The Sk8-Hi features navy suede and light denim underlays with patchwork features on the outer walls, whilst the Authentic comes dressed in blue chambray with dark and light Sashiko decorated patches. The collection is now available at select Hype DC stores in Men’s sizing US4-13 (no half sizes).
